It’s summer in Sacramento, which means it is hard to avoid the sun.
However, finding the right sunscreen to protect your skin from the California sun can be difficult. Given that 90% of skin aging is cause by UV damage to the skin, it is imperative to wear sunscreen every day to protect against wrinkles and photo damage, and most importantly skin cancer.
It may be a struggle to find a sunscreen that you like putting on your skin. So many formulations feel greasy and heavy, which frankly no one wants to put on their skin every morning. And yes, you need to apply your sunscreen every day even if it is cloudy out!
Here is a primer on what to look for in any sunscreen.
Dr. Tanghetti’s Sunscreen Musts:
- At least an SPF of 30 – This will provide enough protection for every day. SPF 30 keeps out 97% of the UV radiation.
- Broad Spectrum – This ensures you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays.
- Physical Sunscreen such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide – Physical sunscreens, as opposed to chemical sunscreens, generally provide a greater degree of broad spectrum protection and are less harsh on the skin than chemical sunscreens. Look for high concentrations of these ingredients. (5% or higher)
- Water-Resistant – This is especially important for those that are more active.
